“The sleep of reason…produces monsters” is the conclusion of the series and frames the thoughts that have been behind their production. Goya intended to use his etching, from which I got the title, as the frontispiece for his 80 Los Caprichos. The monsters I imagine are drones, fighter planes, book burners, Punch and Judy, Durer’s knight on horseback and Vladimir Putin, set in a cavernous architectural fantasy inspired by Piranesi. I join Goya’s dilemma that sets the sleep of reason against the necessity of imagination and dreams. We need imagination but also rationality. That cocktail is the spirit of this series of works.
