Chris Orr British, b. 1943
“Northandsouth” is a comment on the old rivalry between different parts of England. North is up and South is down, but if you turn the map on it’s side East Anglia is the North, and Wales is the South. Avoiding the most obvious clichés and putting the Watford Gap in the middle, I play with the idea of a divided country, putting a palm tree in the North and brightly coloured rockets ready to fire in both directions. There are hints of an Apocalypse with Blake’s Angel holding a golden sun and rising and falling figures trying to get to the other place. The North has it’s Dodo but the South has a Dinosaur. There is a levelling up agenda in the shape of a wonky spirit level. The best advice may be “Sit down, yer rockin the boat”. In the North (actually it’s in the South at my workshop at Isleworth near Heathrow airport) is a representation of my cast iron Victorian etching press on which all this series of prints have been produced. I have had this brilliant machine for 30 years. My best friend.
