We all remember banging on pots and pans of a Thursday night to show our appreciation of the NHS, way back in the heady days of early lockdown. Tin pot is synonymous with something slightly wonky. The tin bath leaks easily, and a tin pot dictatorship is both corrupt and inefficient. My “Tin Pot Orchestra” makes a cacophony of sound from the every day noises of clocks, food mixers, klaxons and tin cans. There are conventional instruments, but they are being played unconventionally, the violin is being sawn in half. The animals are sympathetic. Cats miaow, frogs croak and dogs begin to howl. Tin Pot leads to Tin Pan Alley in New York and London. This was the centre for the hit song writing business, coined as a derogatory reference to the collective sounds of cheap upright pianos playing different tunes in different rooms. The Tin Pot Orchestra’s greatest hits are “Shake, Rattle and Roll”, “Sosban Fach” and “Polly put the kettle on”.
