The new canvases are a continuation of my interest in locating a pictorial space between figuration and abstraction. They combine images of landscape and figurative forms. The paintings are developments of small oils on paper, 15 x 10.5 cm, created at the start of lockdown when like many other artists, my living room became the studio. When increasing the scale, it was important to maintain the dense graphic composition of the small works. Previous work has been layered with colour, pattern and mark-making but this new work employs a less decorative format embracing the urgency of the brush mark within a limited colour pallet. The picture plane is flat yet the darker tones allow a receding space.
